How Much Does a Custom AI Chatbot Cost in 2026?
Short answer: with an experienced offshore team, a custom AI chatbot typically costs $2,500–$6,000 for a website FAQ bot. Add a CRM link, your documents and WhatsApp, and it is $4,000–$11,000. US agencies often quote $30,000 or more. No-code builders start at about $32 a month. Running costs are usually small: a few cents of AI fees per conversation, plus channel fees and support.

Three ways to get an AI chatbot
Before you compare quotes, decide which kind of chatbot you need. The price gap between the options is large.
| Option | Typical 2026 price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| No-code chatbot builder (for example Chatbase) | $32–$400 a month, billed yearly, with a set number of message credits | A quick FAQ bot trained on your website and a few files |
| Helpdesk AI agent (for example Intercom Fin) | $0.99 per resolved conversation, plus helpdesk seats if you use them | Support teams already on that helpdesk |
| Custom-built chatbot | $2,500–$20,000 to build offshore; $30,000+ from many US agencies | Your own data, systems, languages and rules |
A no-code builder is often the right first step. A custom build pays off when the bot must work inside your systems, follow your rules or keep data where you choose. If the bot will answer support tickets, see what AI support agents cost per resolution.
What a custom chatbot costs to build
These ranges come from our own cost estimator, which uses the same settings we quote from:
| Scope | Typical build price | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| FAQ chatbot on your website: one language, no integrations, small volume | $2,500–$6,000 | 2–4 weeks |
| Lead-capture chatbot on website and WhatsApp, linked to your CRM, trained on a few hundred documents | $4,000–$11,000 | 4–6 weeks |
| Two languages (for example English and Arabic), 3–5 systems, admin dashboard, personal data, 1,000–20,000 chats a month | $8,000–$20,000 | 7–9 weeks |
Optional support after launch runs about 15–25% of the build price a year, from about $200 a month. AI usage and hosting fees are extra and depend on volume.
If the bot needs to take actions, such as booking, refunding or updating records, it becomes an AI agent. Our AI agent development cost guide covers those prices.
What US and European agencies quote
Agency prices vary widely. Monocubed, a development company with offices in the USA and Canada, published these 2026 ranges:
| Chatbot type | Published range |
|---|---|
| Rule-based chatbot | $5,000–$30,000 |
| AI/NLP chatbot | $30,000–$150,000 |
| Generative AI chatbot | $75,000–$300,000 |
| Enterprise agentic chatbot | $150,000–$500,000+ |
The same article lists typical hourly rates of $100–$200 in North America, $50–$75 in Europe and $25–$50 in India and South-East Asia. Part of the gap between quotes comes from these rates.
So ask every vendor for a breakdown by task and hours. Then compare like for like.
What drives the price
- Integrations. Each system the bot reads from or writes to adds build and testing time. In our estimator, one or two tools add about 20%, and six or more can double the base price.
- Your content and data. A few FAQ pages are quick. Thousands of messy records need cleaning and a retrieval set-up, often called RAG. Our RAG vs fine-tuning guide explains the choice.
- Channels and languages. Website, WhatsApp, Instagram and email each need their own set-up and testing. Our estimator adds about 15% for a second channel or language.
- An admin dashboard or app. Many teams want to see conversations, leads and settings. A simple dashboard adds $1,500–$3,500 in our estimator.
- Data sensitivity. Personal, health or financial data needs tighter access controls, logging and sometimes private hosting.
- Deadline. Our estimator adds 25% for delivery in under three weeks.
Running costs after launch
A chatbot has three ongoing costs: the AI model, the channel and support.
| Cost | Published 2026 price | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| AI model (for example OpenAI GPT-5.4 mini) | $0.75 per million input tokens; $4.50 per million output tokens | Usually a few cents per conversation, even with long answers |
| WhatsApp service replies | Since 1 October 2026, 1,000 free per business number a month, then charged by country | Messages from customers to you are free |
| Meta's own Business AI agent on WhatsApp | $2.00 per million tokens | Meta puts a typical message at about 4–5 cents |
| Support and improvements | 15–25% of the build a year (our estimator); 15–20% (Monocubed) | Fixes, new questions, model updates and monitoring |
In the example below, support costs more than the AI model. Ask for a fixed monthly support fee rather than open-ended hours.
Example: first-year cost of a lead-capture chatbot
Here is how the numbers add up for the middle option above: a chatbot on your website and WhatsApp, linked to your CRM. Our estimator puts optional support for this scope at about $200–$250 a month.
| Cost item | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Build (one-off) | $4,000 | $11,000 |
| Support, 12 months | $2,400 | $3,000 |
| AI model fees, 12 months (assumption: 2,000 chats a month, three replies each, about two cents a reply) | $1,440 | $1,440 |
| First-year total, before channel and hosting fees | $7,840 | $15,440 |
This is an illustration, not a quote. Your volume, model choice and reply length will move the model fees. From year two, only support and running costs remain.
Two risks that affect the budget
Wrong answers are your responsibility. In February 2024, a Canadian tribunal ruled against Air Canada after its website chatbot gave a customer wrong information about bereavement fares. The airline argued the chatbot was a separate entity. The tribunal said the company was responsible for everything on its website, chatbot included. Budget for testing, and limit the bot to approved content.
You must say it is an AI. Since 2 August 2026, Article 50 of the EU AI Act has applied. Systems that talk directly with people must tell them they are dealing with an AI, unless it is obvious. A one-line notice at the start of each chat covers this. This is general information, not legal advice.
How to keep the cost down
- Start with one channel and one job. For example, answer product questions on your website. Add WhatsApp and lead capture once that works.
- Fix your content first. Clear, current answers cost less to work with than a bigger model or more code.
- Use a smaller model where it is good enough. Test answers on real questions before paying for the largest model.
- Agree what "done" means. A written test set of real questions and a pass mark stop scope creep.
- Own your accounts. The model, hosting and WhatsApp accounts should be in your company's name, so you can change vendor later.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a simple AI chatbot cost?
A no-code builder costs about $32–$400 a month. A custom FAQ chatbot on your website typically costs $2,500–$6,000 to build with an experienced offshore team, over 2–4 weeks.
Why do chatbot quotes vary so much?
Mostly because of hourly rates and scope. Published rates run from $25–$50 an hour in South-East Asia to $100–$200 in North America. Integrations, languages and data add the rest.
How much does a chatbot cost to run each month?
AI model fees are usually a few cents per conversation. Add WhatsApp fees above the free tier, hosting, and support of about 15–25% of the build price a year.
Is a WhatsApp chatbot more expensive?
The build costs a little more, because it is another channel to set up and test. Running costs depend on volume: since October 2026, each number gets 1,000 free service messages a month.
Should I use ChatGPT or build a custom chatbot?
A general assistant cannot see your stock, bookings or customer records. A custom chatbot answers from your own content, follows your rules and can pass leads straight to your CRM.
