AI Customer Support Agents in 2026: Cost, Deflection Rates and ROI
Short answer: an AI customer support agent costs about $0.49–$2.00 per conversation or resolution on the main helpdesk platforms, plus seat fees. A custom agent connected to your helpdesk and order system typically costs $7,500–$19,500 to build with an experienced offshore team. Expect it to resolve 40–60% of conversations at launch, rising with good help content. The return depends mostly on that resolution rate and your cost per human-handled ticket.

What an AI support agent does (and how it differs from a chatbot)
An AI support agent reads a customer's question, finds the answer in your help content and replies in plain language. Unlike an old FAQ bot, it can also act. It can check an order, start a return, update an address or open a ticket with a summary for your team.
Most teams use it in three places:
- Front line: answering chat, email or WhatsApp messages before they reach a person.
- Agent assist (copilot): drafting replies and summaries for your human agents inside the helpdesk.
- Triage: tagging, routing and prioritising tickets so the right person sees them first.
Our guide to AI agents vs chatbots explains the difference in more detail.
Deflection vs resolution: know what you are paying for
Vendors use these words differently, and the difference changes your bill.
- Deflection usually means the customer did not go on to contact a person. It can hide customers who simply gave up.
- Resolution usually means the AI answered and the customer confirmed, or did not come back. Each vendor sets its own rules for counting one.
- Conversation or session pricing charges for every chat the AI joins, whether or not it solves the problem.
Ask every vendor for its exact definition and a sample of conversations it counted as "resolved". Check them yourself before you sign.
What the platforms charge in 2026
Here is what the main helpdesk platforms publish, or what third-party analyses report, for their AI agents:
| Platform | AI agent price | Billed per | Other fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom Fin | $0.99 | Outcome (resolution) | Helpdesk seats optional, from $29 a seat a month |
| Gorgias | $0.90 on most plans | Resolved conversation | Overage $0.83–$2.00 depending on plan and billing |
| Freshdesk Freddy AI Agent | $49 per 100 sessions (about $0.49 each) | Session | First 500 sessions included on paid plans; Copilot $29 an agent a month |
| Zendesk | About $1.50 committed, $2.00 pay-as-you-go | Automated (verified) resolution | Suite seats; Copilot $50 an agent a month |
| Salesforce Agentforce | $2.00 per conversation, or about $0.10 per action with Flex Credits | Conversation or action | Agentforce add-ons from $125 a user a month |
The Zendesk figures come from third-party analyses, because Zendesk does not publish them on one page. Always confirm current prices with the vendor.
Per-resolution pricing looks cheap per ticket. At high volume, though, the fee grows with every ticket the AI handles. At 10,000 resolutions a month, $0.99 each is about $9,900 a month, or almost $119,000 a year.
What a custom support agent costs to build
A custom agent makes sense when you run your own helpdesk, serve several languages, or need the agent to act in systems a platform cannot reach. These ranges come from our own cost estimator:
| Scope | Typical build price (offshore team) | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| FAQ support chatbot on your website, no integrations | $2,500–$6,000 | 2–4 weeks |
| Support agent that acts in your helpdesk and order system, trained on your help centre, 1,000–20,000 conversations a month | $7,500–$19,500 | 6–10 weeks |
| Plus 3–5 systems, two languages or channels, an admin dashboard and personal data | $13,500–$33,500 | 9–13 weeks |
Optional support after launch runs about 15–25% of the build price a year, from about $200 a month. AI usage and hosting are extra.
AI model costs per conversation are small. OpenAI lists GPT-5.4 mini at $0.75 per million input tokens and $4.50 per million output tokens. Meta puts a typical message from its own WhatsApp business AI at 20,000–25,000 tokens. On those figures, one reply costs roughly two cents in model fees.

What resolution rate to expect
Published figures come mostly from vendors, so treat them as upper marks rather than promises.
- Intercom puts the industry average for AI agents at 40–60% at launch, rising to 60%+ within 6–12 months.
- Intercom reports Fin's own average at 76% across more than 12,000 customers.
- Intercom also says teams without structured help content tend to stall at 30–45%.
- Klarna said in February 2024 that its AI assistant handled two-thirds of customer service chats in its first month. It said this equalled the work of 700 full-time agents.
The main lever is your knowledge base. Clear, current articles with one answer per question lift resolution more than a bigger AI model does.
Older data shows why this matters. In a 2019 Gartner survey, only 9% of customers said they had solved an issue entirely through self-service.
How to work out the ROI
Use four numbers: tickets a month, your cost per human-handled ticket, the AI's resolution rate and the AI's price per resolution.
Gartner's 2019 research put live channels at an average of $8.01 per contact, against about $0.10 for self-service. Intercom estimates $6–$12 or more for a human-handled ticket today. Here is a worked example using $8 a ticket:
| Example: 5,000 tickets a month at $8 each | 40% resolved by AI | 60% resolved by AI |
|---|---|---|
| Tickets resolved by AI | 2,000 | 3,000 |
| AI fee at $0.99 a resolution | $1,980 | $2,970 |
| AI fee at $2.00 a resolution | $4,000 | $6,000 |
| Human handling cost avoided | $16,000 | $24,000 |
| Gross monthly saving, $0.99 pricing | $14,020 | $21,030 |
These are illustrations, not results. The saving is only real if staff time moves to other work or you hire less as you grow. Gartner found that only 20% of customer service leaders it surveyed had actually cut agent staffing because of AI.

Keep a human in the loop
Customers still want a person on hand. In a 2026 Gartner survey of 3,566 customers, 87% said firms using generative AI must offer a way to reach a human agent. Half said their interactions were easier when firms used it.
Gartner also predicts that by 2027, half of the companies that cut service staff because of AI will rehire for similar work. So plan the AI as a way to absorb volume and free your team, not to remove it.
Good practice for every support agent:
- Say clearly that the customer is talking to an AI assistant.
- Offer a person at any point, and pass a summary so the customer does not repeat themselves.
- Route complaints, refunds above a set amount and vulnerable customers straight to staff.
- Review a sample of AI conversations every week and fix the help articles behind wrong answers.
Platform add-on or custom build?
| Choose a platform AI agent if… | Choose a custom agent if… |
|---|---|
| You already use that helpdesk and plan to stay | You use your own helpdesk, or several tools |
| Volume is modest, so per-resolution fees stay low | Volume is high and per-resolution fees would keep rising |
| Questions are mostly answered by your help centre | The agent must act in order, booking or billing systems |
| English only, one or two channels | Several languages, such as Arabic or Urdu, or WhatsApp |
| Standard data handling is fine | You need control over where data is stored |

Frequently asked questions
How much does an AI customer support agent cost per month?
On helpdesk platforms you pay per resolution, conversation or session: about $0.49–$2.00 each on published and reported 2026 prices, plus seats. At 2,000 AI resolutions a month, that is roughly $1,000–$4,000.
What is a good AI deflection or resolution rate?
Intercom puts the typical starting point at 40–60%, rising to 60% or more within 6–12 months. Rates depend heavily on how complete and clear your help content is.
How much does it cost to build a custom AI support agent?
Our estimator puts a support agent that works in your helpdesk and order system at $7,500–$19,500, over 6–10 weeks. A simple FAQ chatbot starts at $2,500–$6,000.
Will an AI support agent replace my support team?
Usually not. Gartner found only 20% of customer service leaders had cut staff because of AI. Most teams use it to handle repeat questions and give people more time for complex cases.
Is per-resolution or per-conversation pricing better?
Per-resolution pricing means you pay only when the AI solves the issue, but check how a resolution is counted. Per-conversation pricing is easier to forecast but charges for failed chats too.
