AI Voice Agents for Call Centres in 2026: Cost, Limits and How to Set One Up

Short answer: an AI voice agent answers calls, understands what the caller wants and acts on it. It can book an appointment, check an order or route the call. Platform costs run about $0.07–$0.31 a minute, so 10,000 minutes a month costs roughly $700–$3,100 to run. A custom build connected to your systems typically costs $4,000–$12,000 with an experienced offshore team, and much more from a US agency. It works best on high-volume, repeatable calls, with a clear handover to your staff for everything else.

What an AI voice agent does in a call centre (or call center)

A voice agent turns the caller's speech into text, decides what to do with a language model and replies in a natural voice. Unlike an old phone menu, the caller just says what they need. Unlike a simple voice bot, an agent can also act in your systems.

Typical jobs it handles well:

  • Bookings and changes: appointments, viewings, reservations and cancellations.
  • Order and account status: "Where is my order?", balance checks and delivery dates.
  • Common questions: opening hours, prices, policies and documents needed.
  • Triage and routing: finding out why someone is calling, then passing them to the right team with a summary.
  • After-hours and overflow: answering when your team is closed or every line is busy.

Gartner predicts that by 2029 agentic AI will resolve 80% of common customer service issues without a person, cutting operating costs by 30%. Most teams today start well below that, with one or two call types.

What it costs to run

Voice platforms charge per minute of conversation. The price covers speech recognition, the AI model, the synthetic voice and often the phone line. Published 2026 rates:

PlatformPublished priceWhat is included
Retell AI$0.07–$0.31 a minuteDepends on the AI model, voice and add-ons; phone numbers about $2 a month
Vapi$0.05 a minutePlatform fee only; speech, voice and model providers are billed on top
Synthflow$0.09 a minuteVoice engine; the AI model is billed separately

So what does that mean for a real contact centre? At 10,000 minutes a month, about 2,500 calls of four minutes, platform costs come to roughly $700–$3,100 a month. At 50,000 minutes they come to $3,500–$15,500. The choice of AI model and voice is the biggest lever on that range.

Add support and improvements on top. As a rule of thumb, plan about 15–25% of the build price a year for monitoring, fixes and new call types.

What it costs to build

The build connects the voice platform to your phone system, your knowledge and the tools the agent uses, then tests it on real calls. Prices vary mostly by how many systems it touches.

ScopeTypical build priceTimeline
Answer questions and book appointments (1–2 tools, one language)$4,000–$12,000 offshore4–8 weeks
Plus CRM, order system and warm transfer to staff$6,000–$20,000 offshore6–10 weeks
Several languages, many systems or regulated dataQuoted after a scoping call10+ weeks
Same scope from a US agency$50,000–$150,00012–20 weeks for production

The offshore figures come from our own estimator, which starts voice agents at $4,000–$10,000 before extra tools, languages or data. The US figure is RaftLabs' 2026 range for voice AI agents. For the full breakdown, see our AI agent development cost guide.

The limits you should plan for

  • Complex or emotional calls. Complaints, bereavement, disputes and vulnerable callers need a person. Route them early.
  • Noise, accents and weak lines. Speech recognition is good but not perfect. Test with recordings of your own callers, including any Arabic, Urdu or other languages you serve.
  • Interruptions and delays. Callers talk over agents and expect quick replies. Ask how the platform handles interruptions and what the delay is before each answer.
  • Payments. Do not let the AI hear or store card numbers. Send a secure payment link or transfer to a compliant payment line.
  • Actions with consequences. Refunds, cancellations with fees and account changes should need a person's approval, or tight limits written into the agent.

Rules to check before you go live

Three rules matter for most of our clients' markets. This is general information, not legal advice; check with your own adviser.

  • USA: in February 2024 the FCC confirmed that AI-generated voices count as "artificial" under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Outbound calls using them need the called person's prior express consent unless an exemption applies.
  • European Union: since 2 August 2026, Article 50 of the EU AI Act has applied. Systems that talk directly with people must tell them they are dealing with an AI, unless it is obvious.
  • Everywhere: call recordings and transcripts are personal data. Check where they are stored, for how long and who can access them. GDPR, the UAE and Saudi data laws or your local rules apply.

The simplest safe practice: the agent says it is an AI assistant at the start of each call and offers a person.

How to set one up in six steps

  1. Pick one or two call types. Use your call logs to find the most common, repeatable reasons people call. Bookings and order status are typical first choices.
  2. Write down the rules. What the agent may do, what it must never do, and when it hands over.
  3. Connect it. Link the voice platform to your phone numbers or contact centre system, your knowledge base, and the calendar, CRM or order system it needs.
  4. Design the handover. A warm transfer that passes your agent a summary, so callers never repeat themselves.
  5. Test on real recordings. Build a test set from past calls, including difficult ones, and agree a pass mark before launch.
  6. Launch in stages. Start with after-hours or overflow calls, measure for two to four weeks, then widen.

How to measure success

MeasureWhat it tells you
Containment rateShare of calls fully handled by the agent
Transfer rate and reasonsWhere the agent still needs a person, and why
Average handle timeWhether calls get faster for callers and staff
Abandoned callsWhether fewer callers hang up waiting
Customer satisfactionWhether callers are happy with the result
Cost per resolved callPlatform, support and staff time divided by calls resolved

Off-the-shelf or custom?

Ready-made AI receptionists are quick to start and charge a monthly fee or a price per call. They suit standard bookings and FAQs. A custom voice agent makes sense when it must follow your own rules or work inside your CRM or order system. It also suits several languages or a specific handover to your team.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an AI voice agent cost per minute?

Published 2026 platform prices run from about $0.05 a minute plus model costs (Vapi) to $0.07–$0.31 a minute including the model and voice (Retell AI). The AI model and voice you choose decide where you land.

How much does it cost to build a voice agent for a call centre?

An experienced offshore team typically charges $4,000–$12,000 for a focused agent with one or two integrations. US agencies quote about $50,000–$150,000 for production voice agents.

Can an AI voice agent replace call centre staff?

It can take over repeatable calls, such as bookings and status checks, and answer out of hours. Complex, emotional and high-value calls still need people, so most teams use it to free staff rather than replace them.

Do I have to tell callers they are speaking to an AI?

In the EU, yes, under Article 50 of the AI Act, unless it is obvious. In the US, outbound AI-voice calls need prior consent under the TCPA. Telling every caller is the safest practice everywhere.

Can a voice agent speak Arabic or Urdu?

Yes. Modern speech and voice models support Arabic, Urdu and many other languages. Test with recordings of your own callers, because accents and dialects vary.
